The personal journal of Kim Peace
With nothing else to do,
Kim spent much time with her laptop documenting events as they happened.
Below are some entries that she wished to share. Excerpts from each
day appear beside the date, which is actually a link to a word document
containing the entire entry for that day. For best results,
right-click the date and select "open link in new window".
Here we see Kim as
many fellow refugees may remember her.

Prior to
beginning this journal, I was keeping in touch with friends in the US via
laptop and Internet email. I
kept myself and Gloria updated with NOAA’s website and the National
Hurricane Center. The day
before we left to come to Cancun, there was a small tropical depression in
the mid Atlantic Ocean. At that
point, I decided it might be wise to take the laptop with me so I could keep
in touch with what was happening.
We arrived here on Sunday October 16th. We spent the day getting checked in
and arranging our plans for the week, setting up spa appointments and
putting things away in our suite.
We had dinner that evening and went to bed early with anticipation of
starting our wonderful vacation early the next
morning.

6:19 am. we have lost
Internet connection. I am not
able to email any longer. The
wind is howling and the building is leaking and this is only the outer
winds, not the hurricane its self.
The building is creaking and the doors are being made to bang against
the strong winds. Doors have
water puddled up at their base and I just don’t see how we’re
going to ever withstand this monster, if this is already
happening.
Gloria is asleep and I know when she is wakes up, she’ll be
frightened. I know, because
now, I am. The
“officials” will come in to this room in a while with an
update. We still have power,
or, the generators are keeping us in power. It is loud and I don’t know which is worse right
now, the weather or the snoring of men who are still asleep and don’t
know what is happening around them.
I wish I could send one last email!!!!!

8:30 am. This storm seems to be settled right on top of Cancun with no desire
to go elsewhere. Rumors also
have it that this is now a cat.1 storm. I don’t believe that. The noise is still as loud as it has been most of the
time. Ceiling tiles have
fallen, no one hurt. Water now
pours down the walls of the interior next to us. Areas are roped off to avoid people from going into the
most dangerous areas of the hall.
We are all getting very
“antsy” and are ready to get out of here. It is hot, humid, and stuffy in
here. But we’re glad to
be here instead of at the airport sleeping on floors and paying for whatever
there may be to eat, if anything.
We just don’t know what to expect once we leave this
place. We’re in a foreign
country and have no communication with anyone in the states. How will we know if we have a
flight? We are an hour from the
airport. How will we get
there? Where is our
luggage? Will we get it
back? Is it even still in one
piece and a safe place? Our
reservations here ended yesterday.
Will they turn us away as they informed me they would two days ago
when I asked?

12:00pm. We
still have no idea how long we’ll be in here. The state inspectors are slow in
coming and we are on a waiting list.
I have been told that the reason the hotel made everyone check out
was so they would not be responsible for us. We are now the
responsibility of government of Mexico. There is still no contact with the outside and we are
getting what little information we are receiving from a radio someone
has. The power and phone lines
are down all the way from here to Playa Del Carman. This means we will be without power
and phone service indefinitely.
The lagoon and the ocean here are now one. The area just 4 days ago that Gloria and I sunbathed is
gone. They tell us the hotel
has take serious damage and it’s possible we may be in here for days
to come. They tell us not to
crowd the lobby area, but do not come into the hall we’re in to make
announcements here where we can hear.
We have to make out what new we can through people that are in the
lobby area and hear the news.

7:52 am. I heard in the breakfast line this
morning that we finally got out with the satellite phone last night around
11:30pm. Gloria was up when
this happened and added her name to a list of people needing to make a call
out. Hopefully this is a sign
of things getting better and I’ll have Internet connection again
soon

6:54 pm. Today
we spent most of our time trying to find out what is going on with the
airport and the Delta flights.
At one point, Gloria wanted to take a charter bus to Mexico
City, a 2 day trip, and try to get a flight out of there. But we have been told that we now
have a flight out of Cancun airport on Thursday afternoon. This is the 4th flight
we’ve been confirmed on to leave Cancun. We’ve been told that people that left here and were
taken to the airport are now trapped there and are sleeping on the
floors. I’ve decided that
it is best to stay here and wait to see what
happens

6:42 pm. Here we sit.
Wondering how to do this.
We are out of money, some of us. I have 100 pesos left. This is equal to about 10.00 and I am scared. We have about decided to do
this: First, wait until a
couple returns from Carmen Del Playa that has gone to try and check the
status of the airport in Merida

6:08 pm. Four
of the other refugees and I went into Playa Del Carmen today to try and get
information on a bus to Mexico City.
We learned that for 4000.00 American dollars we could charter a
bus. I tried to call Randy and
when I couldn’t reach him I emailed a bunch of people, gave them all
his number and asked them to call him and tell him that I was trying to
reach him. When I tried him
again, he answered, telling me that everyone was calling him to tell him I
was looking for him to help us.

1:56 am. Standing in the early morning air outside the
convention center turned refugee shelter, we are told we’re going to
take a van ride together to the place where they are giving out a limited
number of handwritten boarding passes for the two flights that are leaving
Cancun today. If we get there
early enough, we’ll get a pass and be allowed to enter the
airport. People will be lined
up in a line longer than I can imagine.

There is excitement from all around. TV stations have been contacting
me. Channel 2 and channel 11 in
ATL have asked about an interview, but now that I am home, the story
isn’t exactly news any longer.
